Honors Program, University of Maryland

I'm currently an adjunct Lecturer in University Honors at the University of Maryland, College Park. By day I'm a web- and database developer at the National Endowment for the Humanities. At Maryland my friend Michael Hall and I teach two courses: HONR 218C, "Western Intellectual Heritage: The Hero and Society" and HONR 269J, "The Beat Begins: American Culture in the 1950s." Prior to coming to the NEH (and to Maryland) I taught philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, the College of Charleston, and Gonzaga University. Most of my teaching and writing have focused on ethics and Greek philosophy, especially Plato and Aristotle.

I'm also a discographer. Since the early 1990s I've maintained a website focused on Miles Davis's recordings. It's called "Miles Ahead". If you're interested in Miles Davis (especially his pre-1980s music), take a look. There's a discography, a sessionography, a searchable database, cover art, liner notes, news about upcoming releases, links to other Davis websites, etc. There's also a Charlie Parker sessionography and a (very rudimentary) discography of compact disc reissues. I also maintain a list of jazz links if you're interested in jazz more generally.

Jazz Links Mission Statement

The mission of the International Association for Jazz Education is to assure the continued worldwide growth and development of jazz and jazz education. As a part of that mission, the Association initiates programs which nurture and promote the understanding and appreciation of jazz and its heritage, provide leadership to educators regarding curricula and performance, assist teachers and practitioners with information and resources, and take an active part in organizing clinics, festivals and symposia at local, regional, national and international levels. Founded in the United States in 1968 as the National Association of Jazz Educators (NAJE), the organization formally changed its name to the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) in 1989 to more accurately reflect its membership base and global commitment to jazz education. Presently, active memberships total upwards of 8,000 teachers, musicians, students, music industry representatives, and enthusiasts in 35 countries.

Smooth Jazz Links My name is Peter Böhi and I am 40 years old. I live in Switzerland and am the head of an ob/gyn department of a middle sized hospital, besides I have an own practice as an ob/gyn specialist. My hobbies and interests include a variety of things. My biggest hobby for over 20 years is collecting contemporary jazz. When I was 16 I discovered the music of people like Eddie Harris, Herbie Hancock, Joe Farrell, Billy Cobham, George Benson, Hubert Laws and many others and as long as the music was funky, groovy and instrumental it was right up my alley.

Hot Jazz Links! The Hot Steamed Jazz Festival started in 1992 with a music mission to bring, for a full weekend, the best of Greater New England's traditional jazz, swing and blues to Connecticut. Today the festival is clearly recognized by musicians, jazz critics, and aficionados for presenting high quality classic jazz.

The Hot Steamed Jazz Festival is held to benefit Paul Newman's The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a camp for children with cancer or serious blood diseases. Proceeds from the festival will help children to attend the camp. With this relationship, The Hot Steamed Jazz Festival brings top quality music entertainment to the community, while giving back to the community through our support of children and families in need of special services. Both the festival and the camp are non-profit organizations.

In addition, the festival contributes to two organizations which contribute unselfishly to the people and the town of Essex, The Essex Ambulance Association and The Essex Fire Department. We appreciate all they do for our community.

We would like to thank all of you who have come to enjoy this fine music and to help support the camp. We hope you have a great weekend filled with wonderful music and dancing.

Jazz After Hours - Jazz Links In addition to some 80 radio stations broadcasting Jazz After Hours every weekend, several also simultaneously "stream" the program to the internet as well. You'll find it on late night and early morning hours on weekends on WAMC, WCPN, WIUM, KUNC, and KPLU.

We’ve had lots of great guests visit Jazz After Hours in the last several months. Among them have been Branford Marsalis, Charles Lloyd, Michael Wolff, Mel Rhyne & Peter Bernstein, Nnenna Freelon, Joshua Redman, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Barron and Charlie Hunter. Many have appeared on our show in conjunction with engagements at one of the West Coast’s premier jazz clubs, Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle, or with Earshot Jazz.
