spnm - promoting new music From contemporary, jazz, classical and popular music to that written for film, dance and other creative media, spnm is one of the main advocates of new music in Britain today.

spnm was founded in 1943 and continues to fulfil and build upon the brief that spurred its existence: to promote and advance the education of the public by encouraging the understanding, appreciation and development of music composed by living musicians born or resident in the UK, and of music generally as expressed in any other medium or form.

spnm achieves this through its eclectic annual programme of concerts, events, workshops and collaborations and through its monthly publication new notes. Guest artistic directors add their own special flavour: Deirdre Gribbin will be our next Artistic Director for the season 2003/2004.

Through its award-winning work with composers of all ages, spnm generates an interest in the new. Work is brought to the public ear through partnership, dialogue and interaction with performers and audiences. Through this process the mystery which has surrounded the composition of new music is dispelled.

There are no boundaries. spnm will continue to develop this forum of inspiration and support for audiences, performers, composers and other creative artists over the next fifty years and beyond.

Virginia Tidewater Consortium - New Music Per... The New Music Performance Collection is a cooperative project of the Virginia Tidewater Consortium libraries to serve music faculty members who incorporate new music in their teaching. Participating institutions include Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Christopher Newport University, Norfolk State University, and the College of William and Mary. The project was originally conceived in the year 2000 by Dr. Jean Major, University Librarian for Old Dominion University Libraries. A committee was formed, comprised of Tidewater Consortium librarians, to develop the project idea further, map out the website design, and survey music faculty from each participating institution. In 2001, the New Music Advisory Board was formed to include music faculty members and further develop and revise the website database and design. The Norfolk Foundation provides funding for the project through a grant.

Perceptual mechanisms in music perception

Project: Perceptual mechanisms in music perception

In order to gain insight in the processes of music perception, one can study the perceptual mechanisms by which the human listener forms a mental representation of the musical stimulus. Assuming the tone as the smallest functional unit, we examine how brief tone series are perceived, or, more specifically, which factors determine whether a tone series forms a coherent percept, i.e. a melody. In this project different sets of tone series are used, each set consisting of all possible sequential orders of a collection of tones. For each set it is assumed that a number of tone series will be perceived as melodies, while others will not be perceived as melodies.
