Viola da gamba - Gesellschaft Welcome, Viola da Gamba friends

Our society was founded in 1992 in Switzerland and is the younger sister of the VdG Society of Great Britain, the VdGS of America and others around the world.  Its purpose is to spread out information about the viol and everything connected with. We also want to promote contacts between viol players and fans.
Therefore we publish a quarterly periodical

welcome I recently decided to get back into playing music, after a long absence. I thought about different instruments, and considered playing the cello, but there is not much solo music I really like for that instrument, since I prefer early music and baroque music.

So, I decided to try and learn the viol.

It may seem to be an anachronism, making music by rubbing horse-hairs impregnated with tree resin against bits of animal intestine stretched over a wooden box, especially in this hypermodern era. But that is part of its charm: there is something quite relaxing about the viol that comes from another, perhaps simpler age. It has a soft, velvety sound that is not found in other string instruments, and the music written for it has an intensely meditative quality. Its sound is the closest of all instruments to the human voice.

These pages are my contribution to the world of viol players and music. Together with Jonathan Dunford, a Real viol player, I have tried to organize some of the resources available both on and off the Internet.

Like all web sites, this is always under construction, so come back from time to time to see what we have added.

Dirk Moelants' viola da gamba pages Here you can find some transcriptions of relevant passages from 17th century treatises, together with scans of the original pages. I always tried to stay as close as possible to the original, this includes the use of 17th century spelling and abbreviations, everything in the original language. Illustrations were added in the running text as much as possible. Sometimes the quality could be improved, but it is always possible to look at the scans of the original pages, where somewhat larger versions of the illustrations are given. Hopefully this can be of some use for musicologists and for performers interested in 'historically informed performance practice'.

Viola da Gamba - musicolog.com The viola da gamba, or viol, is a bowed string instrument with frets. It is held upright and supported between the legs. Viola da gamba literally means leg viol. It can also be played, as a plucked instrument, across the lap. Generally, it is a six-stringed instrument, but seven-stringed basses are very popular and five-stringed instruments are not rare.

Viola da Gamba Articles The list below is by no means a complete bibliography of materials concerning the history and development of the viola da gamba family. Indeed, so much material is available that a full list would exceed the scope of this project, and furthermore, a number of extensive viol bibliographies exist elsewhere. My own research bias has been towards the use of the larger members of the viol family and their repertoires (such as the lyra viol, viola bastarda and divisions viol, for example). But the list could easily be augmented by referencing the journals of the Viola da Gamba Societies of America and Great Britain, and by including biographical studies of the many composers who wrote for these instruments.
Welcome to the Viola da Gamba Society of Grea... The Viola da Gamba Society started in 1948 with the aim of advancing the study of viols, their music, their playing, and their making.

The viol family consists of a range of bowed instruments, similar in scope to the violin family. They flourished in 16th and 17th century Europe, with the focus for much of the ensemble, or 'consort', music being in England.

Kazuo Imai: Profile Guitar, viola da gamba (replica) and electronics

Born in Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture, September 24, 1955

Kazuo Imai creates unique and powerful free improvised music, combining his excellent technique with the passion of free jazz, and the textures of ethnic and avant-garde classical genres. His principal instrument is the guitar--both acoustic and electric--and he uses various techniques to play it: fingering; picking; hitting and scratching the strings with a pick, or one or both hands; bowing; placing sticks under the strings; and using effectors. In addition to guitar, Imai plays the viola da gamba (replica) and live electronics in his performances. He succeeds in conveying his musical world to his listeners with remarkably high degrees of abstraction, density and tension.

Historical treatises Historical treatises on viola da gamba

The following article is adapted from an early chapter of my M.Mus thesis on pedagogy of the viola da gamba. It examines the main historical treatises, in order to place them in time and to give a context for the chapters which follow. Where known, some brief biographical material has been included to give a picture of the author and his ideas. Other material, such as Marais' or De Machy's prefatory material, or any letters is not reviewed here.
A question which may appear flippant could read "When is a viol tutor not a viol tutor?" The answer is serious: when it's a lute tutor. The viol's origins in the vihuela and lute had a profound influence on its technique in each period of its development, though sometimes in different ways. The indications to be found in various treatises - Judenkünig (1523), Robinson (1603) and Mace (1676) - all suggest that the left hand technique of the two instruments was identical. This article only covers those pedagogical works which principally concern the viol.
